No excuse for single use with recycled PET cutlery

Tri-Star Packaging is the first company in the UK to launch disposable cutlery made from recycled PET material.

Over the past 18 months, Tri-Star Packaging and its manufacturer suppliers have been consistently developing more and more products featuring recycled PET (rPET) material.

“We recognise the need to reduce reliance on ‘virgin’ PET, accessing the post-consumer waste stream and leading the way in incorporating more and more rPET into our packaging,” said Tri-Star Packaging founder Kevin Curran.

‘As thought leaders in our sector we are continuously working with our suppliers to drive greater levels of sustainability into our processes, and we are proud to be the first company in the UK to launch ‘disposable’ cutlery made from rPET.’

Exclusive to Tri-Star Packaging, the new cutlery range incorporates 97% recycled PET (rPET), so plastic that has already been used is used again, rather than being sent to landfill or being littered on our streets or ending up in our rivers, streams and oceans.

To help minimise our carbon footprint, the rPET cutlery range is manufactured in the UK, supporting British manufacturing and reducing the impact on the environment by having it travel very few miles to its final destination.

Communication of the environmental benefits to end-users is crucial, and Tri-Star Packaging usually ensures that all its packaging is adequately labelled to clearly display the materials it is made from and provide advice on the best means of disposal.

“But what about items which are too small to do this, such as our new rPET cutlery range?” asked Kevin Curran. “We’ve thought about the need to take these important messages to the consumer, so as there’s no room to include it on the items themselves, we will be supplying window stickers with each pack, designed to remind consumers about their role in the environmental journey – from coffee cup recycling to water bottle refilling.

“This new rPET cutlery range represents another step in Tri-Star Packaging’s important and publicly stated journey to improve the environmental sustainability credentials for the company and its customers,” said Kevin Curran.
